Young husband's wedding anniversary tribute to childhood sweetheart who died in most heartbreaking love story you will ever read Emmy and Jake Coates met when they were 11 and after two decades of highs and lows, the pair were sent one final and devastating blow A grieving young husband whose childhood sweetheart died in the middle of their incredible love story has paid tribute to his "gorgeous girl" - on what would have been their one-year wedding anniversary. Recalling the night before he married his terminally-ill bride in September 2016, Jake Coates said he "couldn't sleep" because of the excitement. His soulmate, the "stunning and positive" Emmy Collett, was about to make her vows knowing the marriage would be short as she did not have long to live. "But I'll forever be grateful that you did. We made the best team. Miss you more than ever my gorgeous girl." Jake and Emmy met when they were 11-years-old and at just 13, a blushing Jake told his crush she was his "lobster". The couple later dated for three years, deciding to go their separate ways when they went to university at 19. But after keeping in touch for 10 years - by which time Jake was working as a doctor in Australia and Emmy a primary school teacher in London - the pair gave in to their lasting feelings for one another. They negotiated the time difference and spoke to each other on FaceTime daily, travelling back and forth across the world.
